PURPOSE

The Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology prepares a student for career opportunities in two areas of specialization. The student who specializes in the sport management area will receive a strong background in sports as well as a strong business component allowing them to develop skills enabling the student to hold management level positions in organized sport. Those students specializing in exercise science will also receive a strong background in sports with an emphasis on wellness and care of injuries allowing them to seek careers related to health and wellness in schools, community, or business. The program also seeks to fulfill prerequisites to professional schools in allied health fields.

GOALS

  1. To provide the education and training through kinesiology courses that are essential to success ful employment after graduation.
  2. To prepare the student for the successful pursuit of either graduate study or a career in sports related fields.
  3. To provide a Christian worldview of sports in our society and the importance of an active and healthy lifestyle.

OBJECTIVES

In completing the curriculum for the Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology the student will:

  1. Develop an understanding of the history of phys ical education and sport.
  2. Survey principles of the physical fitness, first aid and safety.
  3. Acquire basic sport skills in several lifetime and team sports.
  4. Develop knowledge and understanding of per sonal and community health.
  5. Develop an appreciation for the use of physical activities in meeting the individual needs of the physically handicapped in our society.
  6. Investigate the functioning of the human body in movement activities, as well as how we learn motor skills.
  7. Develop skills in measurement of physical activi ties and skills.
  8. Acquire knowledge of and skill in the care and pre vention of athletic injuries.
In addition the student that specializes in sport management will:
  1. Survey principles of management in organized sport.
  2. Understand the legal implications of providing ath letic services to the schools, communities, and business.
  3. Develop skills in the promotion and marketing of sport and physical activity programs.
The student specializing in exercise science will:
  1. Understand basic principles of nutrition and diet planning.
  2. Gain experience in exercise testing and exercise prescriptions.
  3. Explore the scientific basis of principles of health fitness.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

An entering freshman must meet the overall col lege requirements to enter the Kinesiology program. An upperclassman must have earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 or above.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

In order to graduate with a Kinesiology degree a student must:

  1. Complete the requirements listed below for the Kinesiology curriculum, for a total number of at least 127 semester hours.
  2. Earn a minimum grade point average of 2.0 for all course work taken. No grade below a “C” in required Kinesiology courses will be accepted for graduation credit. In the event a grade of “D” or lower is earned in a required course, that course must be retaken until at least a “C” grade is earned.
  3. Take the exit examination as required by the Kinesi ology faculty and earn a passing grade of 70% or higher.
  4. Also, the Kinesiology faculty will conduct an exit interview with each candidate for graduation. This interview is for the purpose of assessment of the pro gram and assistance for the student in postgradua tion plans.
