Things to Know about Residence Life @ ECThings to Know about Residence Life @ EC

  • The opening and closing dates of the Residence Halls will be posted on the Emmanuel College Website.
  • Most residence hall rooms are double occupancy.  They are equipped with both wired and wireless (G format only) internet connections.  There is 1 phone line which is shared by both residents.  Our phone system has voice mail.  You will be given instructions on setting up your voice mail, should you utilize the service, upon your arrival.  Local phone service is provided, but you will need a long distance calling card to make long distance calls. Most students have cell phones.
  • The Cingular/ATT network works the best.  The T Mobile network works on a roaming basis (usually shows up as Suncom), but others such as Verizon, Sprint, Alltel, etc. have very minimal to no coverage on campus.
  • Each EC student will receive a college email address.  This email account must be checked very regularly, if not daily.  Email is the most used form of communication on the campus.  Important notices, classroom assignments, and general college information will be transmitted daily via the college’s email network.
  • Each residence hall floor is staffed with a Resident Assistant (RA).  The RAs report to a Residence Director (RD).
  • Depending on occupancy and other issues, room assignments and/or roommates are subject to change.  Rare occasions may occur in which the assignment change must take place after the start of school.  Should such an occasion arise, we will work with you to minimize the disruption as much as possible.  We reserve the right to consolidate spaces as needed.  Should the resident want to change his/her assignment, they will be given the opportunity to do so during the semester.
  • We want you to personalize your living space as much as possible.  Feel free to hang up pictures and posters to give your room some personality, using tape (no duct tape, nails, screws, etc., please) or wall-mounting strips.  The furniture in the room may be carefully rearranged, but it may not be removed.  You may refer to the enclosed “What to Bring” list for other ideas.
  • We have a curfew.  The curfew helps adds a sense of responsibility to the residents, is a community building time, and helps aid in our safety and security efforts.  Therefore, the residents of Drum, Jackson, and Wellons are required to remain in their residence hall after 12 Midnight Sunday through Thursday and by 1:00am on Friday and Saturday.  Curfew ends at 6:00am the next morning.
  • Residents are required to sign out when they are not spending the night in the residence hall, such as going home for the weekend.  This is done for emergency purposes so that in the event of an emergency, we know whom we need to account.
  • All full-time enrolled students are required to attend the weekly Tuesday morning Convocation services and all resident students are required to attend the weekly Wednesday night Chapel services.  A request to be exempted from this requirement may be submitted the Office of Student Life.  Exemption requests must be submitted by the end of the first full week of classes.
  • All resident students must obtain a post office box from the Franklin Springs post office.
  • All residents with cars will be required to register their vehicle with Parking Services.  They will be issued a parking sticker and may only park in the lot designated for their residence hall.
  • Room sizes vary somewhat from building to building and can vary some from where you are in the building.  Jackson Hall has the widest variety of room sizes ranging from small, single occupancy rooms, to the largest rooms on the campus.  Wellons Hall rooms average 14' x 12', Drum Hall rooms average 14' x 9', and King Street/Melton Halls average 15' x 12'.
  • Many of you will experience having a Roommate.  Chances are this will be the first time you have shared a room (possibly smaller than your room at home) with a non-family member for an extended period of time.  Your roommate could be someone you have never met and may come from someplace you have never heard of.  Having and dealing with a roommate is one of the greatest challenges and educational growth experiences you will have throughout your college career.  The Residence Life staff will work with you in making your roommate experience a blessed one.  If you want a good roommate, be a good roommate.
  • If you do not have a particular person you want to be your roommate (requests must be mutual), we will select one for you.  We recommend that you do not live with your best friend.  In many cases, you are best friends because you don’t live together.  In making roommate selections, we try to match up ages, educational majors and sports team members.  We do not take into consideration denominational affiliation or race.
  • We have a closed weekend each semester.  A closed weekend is those in which all residents are required to stay on-campus and a series of special events/programs are planned during those times.  The closed weekends are always the 1st weekend of each semester.  The closed weekend during the fall is called Alpha Weekend, and the closed weekend at the beginning of the spring term is New Beginnings Weekend.
  • The residence halls close during Thanksgiving and Christmas Breaks.  All residents are required to vacate the buildings during those times.  The residence halls remain open during fall break and spring break, although food service is not necessarily available during all of those times.
  • The greater Franklin Springs area offers a variety of options for Medical, Automotive, and Shopping services as needed.  Additional information concerning community resources will be available at the beginning of the fall semester, and/or please feel free to ask any Student Life Staff member for assistance.
  • The College’s master calendar can be found on the main website page.  This calendar contains information about the many events which occur on the campus, such as athletic events, cultural programs, plays, meetings and other general information.  Also, throughout the campus there are numerous bulletin boards which will announce activities and events which may be occurring on or off campus.
  • The Franklin Springs area offers many different things to do especially on weekends.  There is a state park and 18-hole golf course within 2 miles of the campus.  There are additional state parks, Lake Hartwell and other golf courses within a 20 minutes drive of the campus.  We are conveniently located near Athens and Atlanta, plus Anderson and Greenville, SC are within an hour’s drive.  These cities offer shopping, movie theaters and many other recreational opportunities.  The Student Activity Center (SAC) on campus has a swimming pool, racquetball courts, weight rooms, and pool tables, plus the gym is available for student use when not being used for class or Athletic program purposes.
  • Each residence hall has laundry facilities.  The machines are coin operated costing $1.00 to wash and $1.00 to dry.  There are change machines in Jackson, Wellons, and King Street Halls.
  • We have a very comprehensive and competitive intercollegiate athletic program featuring both men’s and women’s sports.  They would greatly appreciate your active support and attendance.  Some coaches may allow an opportunity for students to compete for walk-on roster positions.  We also have a recreational intramural sports program which runs throughout the year.  If you are into professional and/or major Division 1 NCAA sports, the city of Atlanta hosts professional football, basketball, and baseball teams, plus The University of Georgia Bulldogs (SEC) and the Clemson Tigers (ACC) are within an hour drive of the campus.
  • We have a Residence Hall Association (RHA) which is made up of a select number of residents from each residence hall.  This group meets on a regular basis with the director of Campus Life to discuss and address on-campus living issues.  If you would be interested in being a part of the RHA, please contact Philip Cortese, Director of Campus Life at pcortese@ec.edu.
  • We offer three different food service options on the campus.  1) The Dining Hall, which is located on the Quad in Taylor Hall primarily serves the residential life community and is where you will utilize your all-you-can-eat meal plan.  You must be on a meal plan or pay at the door to gain access to the Dining Hall.  2) The Lion’s Den, which is located next to the gym, is a pay-as-you-go food serve specializing in made to order fast food items.  The Lion’s Den, in addition to the food service area, also has a lounge area with a large screen TV.  3) The LifeSpring Café is located in the LifeSpring/EC bookstore.  The café specializes in a variety of coffee and other specialty drinks, plus specialty sandwiches.  All three of these areas offer wireless internet access.
  • The College’s Student Handbook is available on line under the Student Life web page.  The handbook includes valuable information on college resources, student’s rights and responsibilities, the College’s Code of Conduct and disciplinary procedures, plus other important information.  The handbook is revised on an annual basis.  The handbook contains additional information concerning campus life and standards beyond what is contained in this tip sheet.  It is the student’s responsibility to be knowledgeable of what is in the handbook.

We pray your time at Emmanuel will not only be a time of educational and intellectual development, but also a time of spiritual and relational development.  Although we offer Convocations, Chapels, and small group bible studies on the campus, we want and will assist you in getting plugged into a local Church body.  Several different denominations have fellowships within a close proximity of the campus.  We pray that your time on campus will be one in which you will actively engage God, Self, and Others!

We look forward to living and working with you over the course of your Emmanuel career!
