W.E. “Erby” Shaw Plaza
On October 8, 2011, during Homecoming weekend, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for the W. E. “Erby” Shaw Plaza.
In attendance at the ceremony were Jack and Jane Shaw, Larry and Joyce Shaw and their children, Martha and Joe Shaw-Frank. Additionally, Sherm and Bett Smith and approximately 200 alumni and friends, staff, and board members all joined in the celebration.
The plaza, a 3600-square-foot outdoor reading and study area, includes an 8-foot central water feature, tables and chairs, and wireless internet access. It is located on the side of the Shaw-Leslie library and was funded by an initial matching gift challenge from W.E. “Erby” Shaw and the Shaw family. Alumni Association President Sherm Smith, and his wife, Bett, coordinated the project, and board members and other alumni also contributed. Emmanuel employees, local alumni, and students volunteered their time to make the vision a reality.
This new addition to Emmanuel, along with the street lights also dedicated on October 8 and the entrance signs that were dedicated in 2009, are visual enhancements to the campus and the first step toward a major campus landscape renovation. It has also been a great enhancement to campus life, as students, faculty, and staff have been enjoying this scenic outdoor space since its completion.
