For whom was the library named?
Construction of the library began in 1980, thanks to the generosity of Mr. Jack Shaw and others. It was built debt free and occupied in the fall of 1981. The Shaw-Leslie Library was named to honor Mr. Shaw's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Irby Shaw, and his wife’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. W. N. Leslie.
What kind of materials can I access in the library?
Access is provided to a variety of information resources to meet the general, instructional, research, and recreational needs of the Emmanuel College community, including 42,000+ books, 34,000+ e-Books, and A-V materials, primarily compact discs, videos and DVDs. The library subscribes to 105 periodicals and provides access to numerous full text journal articles through online databases, accessible via GALILEO. Back issues of periodical articles are available in bound volumes or full-text online. Bound volumes are found on the second floor in the periodicals room.
How do I find the materials I need?
The library’s holdings are listed in the online catalog Destiny, which includes both our print and online collections. Access to the catalog is available at terminals in the library or through the Internet on any computer. The online collection is accessible through www.netlibrary.com; you need to create a free account on campus to access the collection. Our print collection is housed on both the first and second floors of the library; we use the Dewey Decimal System to arrange our book collection.
For how long may I check out a book?
Most materials check out for 14 days and can be renewed twice.
For how long may I check out a video or DVD?
Videos and DVDs are available only for in-library use.
May anyone check out library materials?
Students, faculty and staff of Emmanuel College may borrow materials from the Shaw-Leslie Library with a college I.D. card. Local residents may also check out a limited amount of materials after registering at the circulation desk and paying the $10 user fee.
How do I create Library Account?

Why do I need a Personal Library Account?
The primary purpose of your library account is to manage the materials you have on loan from the library. You can renew your books, check due dates and even create unique lists of materials available in our library.
How much are the fines for overdue materials?
Fines are charged @ 10 cents per day for books. Lost items are charged the replacement cost of the book plus a $5.00 processing fee. Library fines and overdue materials will restrict your college accounts, meaning you may not check out any books until the library obligation is paid.
The library is closed; how can I return my books?
Library materials can be returned only when the library is open. Please plan accordingly.
What kind of security system does the library have?
The entrances and exits to the library have 3M security systems. If an alarm sounds, please return to the Circulation Desk.
I know this is an academic library, but what else do you offer?
Shaw-Leslie Library focuses mainly on academic materials, but also offers current magazines, fiction, paperbacks, videos, DVDs, CDs, digital art and music, e-books and e-journals and wireless Internet access.
What is GALILEO?
GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary LEarning Online, an initiative of the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia. A Web-based virtual library, GALILEO provides access to multiple information resources, including secured access to licensed products. Participating institutions may access over 100 databases indexing thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 2,000 journal titles are provided in full-text. What is the GALILEO Password?
The GALILEO password changes periodically throughout the semester. It can be found by logging into CRIS. You must use your EC username and password to access the latest password.
Where do I make copies?
A photocopier is located adjacent to the Circulation Desk; copies are 10 cents per page. Change for the photocopier is available at the Circulation Desk.
May I place a flyer on the entrance doors to the library?
All signs posted on the front doors of the Shaw-Leslie Library will contain Library-related information only. The library provides a bulletin board inside the front door for campus-related and community information flyers and signs. Please see the library director, Mrs. Joye Slife, for permission to post.
May I print something from the computer?
A printer is available on the 1st floor and in the 2nd floor library lab for printing from online databases, full-text articles, and the Web. Please select "Print Preview" to assess your printing needs before printing.
How much does printing cost?
If you are an EC student, the cost of printing is simply removed from your annual balance of 500 pages. Community patrons, however, are charged 10 cents a page and can pick up their printing from the Circulation Desk.
Is there a place in the library where I can watch a video or a DVD?
You can view DVDs on the library computers. However, you must wear headphones while viewing on the computer. If group viewing is necessary there is a TV with video & DVD playback capability in the Music Listening room on the 2nd floor of the library.
Are cell phones allowed?
Cell phones use is prohibited in Shaw Leslie Library and ringers should be turned off or silenced. As a courtesy to others please use your cell phone in the stairwells or outside the building.
Where are the restrooms located?
Restrooms are located the first and second floors on the east side of the building.
May I bring food or drinks into the library?
Food is not permitted in the public areas of the Library at any time. Drinks in spill-proof containers are permitted, at library study tables and carrels only. Restrictions are necessary because the presence of food and drinks have the potential to destroy or damage computer equipment, books, equipment, and furnishings. Spilled drinks should be cleaned immediately with paper towels available in all restrooms.
