PURPOSE

The purpose of the psychology program at Emmanuel College is to provide students with a broad based knowledge of the field of psychology, including its history as a field of science, current knowledge about human behavior and mental processes, applied areas in the field, and integration with the Christian faith.

Our mission is to prepare students for one of many endeavors:

  1. graduate study in psychology or a psychology related field;
  2. a career in the helping professions; and,
  3. an enlightened understanding of God, themselves, and others as they enter the world after college.
GOALS

To accomplish its purpose, the Psychology program will:

  1. Examine both the modern and ancient aspects of the discipline of psychology.
  2. Help students gain a broad based knowledge in the current field of psychology.
  3. Train students from a Christian perspective and develop skills in interpersonal relationships, communication with clients, and interviewing techniques.
  4. Increase students' understanderstanding of the integrative aspects of psychology, spirituality, and Christianity.
  5. Expose students to the many applied areas in psychology.
  6. Help students gain necessary skills in the interpretation of human behavior, thought, and emotion.

OBJECTIVES

Graduates of the Psychology program should possess the following knowledge base at an under­graduate level of proficiency: 

  •   Biopsychosocial processes of human normal and abnormal development

  •   Basic key concepts in the field including the history of psychology, personality theories and theorists, biological basis of behavior, abnormal psychology, and social psychology.

  •   Statistical procedures, research methodology, and interpretation.

    ·         Secular (APA) and Christian codes of ethics as applied to various areas of professional psychol­ogy.

    ·         Essential facts and concepts of psychological testing and how to read and interpret professional journals and test manuals.

    Graduates of the Psychology program should possess the following skills at an undergraduate level of proficiency.

    ·          Analyze and conduct experimentation within the realm of the behavioral sciences.

    ·         Communicate clearly, interview effectively, and counsel appropriately in a therapeutic setting.

    ·         Organize and give formal presentations in a variety of settings, such as academic, church, and community.

    ·         Use effective interpersonal relationship skills in the classroom and mock therapy sessions.

    ·          Demonstrate progress in personal, social, and spiritual maturation.

    ·         Demonstrate personal, professional, and theo­retical integration of Christianity and psychology.

    ·         Use relevant field experience in various areas of psychology and counseling to aid in vocational choice.

    ·          Write a resume and fill out an application for the purpose of obtaining relevant employment and, for those students desiring to go on to gradu­ate school, select and apply to a suitable graduate school in psychology and its allied fields.

  • ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS

    The student must have completed the core curriculum requirements and earned a cumulative grade point average of 2.5 or above on all work attempted through the sophomore year. Students whose cumulative grade point average is less than the 2.5 requirement at the beginning of their junior year will have one semester to make substantial improvement toward a 2.5 cumulative grade point average. Substantial improvement is defined as having the possibility of achieving the required GPA by the end of the next semester. If this does not happen, the student will not be considered a Psychology Major. A minimum of "C" is required on English 101, 102, CM 130 and PY 210.

    GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS

    Completion of all basic requirements for graduation from Emmanuel College includes completion of the core curriculum, the major requirements for either the Bachelor of Science in Psychology or the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and a minimum grade point average of 2.50.
