The Sound of Music Opens in March
General admission is $5, and show times are 7:30 p.m. March 7, 8, 14 and 15, and 2:30 p.m. March 16. This timeless, beloved musical is directed by Jennifer Lester Benson, Associate Professor of Communication at EC, and music is directed by Dr. Deborah Stark, Associate Professor of Music at EC. It tells the story of a young woman named Maria in 1930s Because the captain's wife is deceased and he is often away, he runs the household as strictly as he does the ships he sails. His unhappy children are resentful of the other governesses and have managed to run off each of them. When Maria arrives, she is initially met with the same hostility, but her kindness, understanding, and sense of fun soon draw them to her and restore much needed joy to their lives, including the captain's. Eventually the captain and Maria find themselves falling in love. However, their relationship becomes overshadowed by world events. Austria is about to be taken over by Germany, and the captain fears he may find himself drafted into the German Navy and forced to fight against his own country.
