Former EC Student Shaun Bennett in Haiti
"We are in Haiti and are OK"
(FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga.)--Former EC Student Shaun Bennett is in Haiti but says he is okay, according to his Facebook. He plays keyboard and guitar in his band called Julian Drive from Athens, Ga., and they had just arrived in Haiti to minister in an orphanage when the magnitude 7.0 earthquake hit on Tuesday, Jan. 12.
Bennett was a business administration major at Emmanuel in 2001-03 and is a graduate of Oconee County High School in Georgia. The band was becoming a bigger commitment about the time they beat out 2000 other contestants in the 2004 Exalting Him talent search competition.
Yesterday about 10:30 a.m., his status on his Facebook said, “I'm in Haiti and survived the earthquake. We are an hour and half West of Port Au Prince. Everyone in the band is OK.”
An older post on his Facebook said, “Lots of lives have been lost here, and we’re just thankful that we are safe and unharmed.”Bennett also posted that they had to leave where they were in Montrouis, Haiti, to a safer location. He does not seem to have access to the Internet and has been using Twitter to update his Facebook. Another post on Wednesday night, Jan. 13, said the US Embassy is now telling them to stay where they are until their rescheduled flight on Thursday, Jan. 21.
Below is Shaun's update on the band's Web site posted January 13.
Hey Everyone,
We are in Montrouis, Haiti right now and have experienced the earthquake. We wanted to let you all know that we are ok and are in a safe place. Please spread the word that we’re alright and to pray for our safety and the people of Haiti. This country was already in desperate need and now that has tripled. We are currently scheduled to fly out tomorrow evening, but we don’t know if that’s even possible right now. We’ll try to keep everyone informed of what’s going on here.
Please Pray.
Shaun Bennett
