Professor to Speak at Emmanuel College about Climate Change in Georgia

Dr. J. Marshal Shepherd, a professor in The University of Georgia’s Department of Geography’s Atmospheric Sciences Program, speaks at Emmanuel College Wednesday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. in Taylor Chapel.

Dr. Shepherd will discuss the changing climate in Georgia. This free event is open to the public and sponsored by EC’s Cultural Awareness Program (CAP).

“The CAP committee is excited to have Dr. Shepherd visit our campus,” says Dr. Emma K. Pettyjohn, CAP Co-Chair. “With his NASA experience, he brings a wealth of knowledge to share with us about the world in which we live.”

Dr. Shepherd received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in physical meteorology from Florida State University. He spent 12 years as a research meteorologist in the Earth-Sun Division at NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. He was also Deputy Project Scientist for the Global Precipitation Measurement (GPM) mission, which launches in 2010.

He has been honored with the Presidential Early Career Award for pioneering scientific research, and he has appeared in numerous media outlets as an expert in weather, climate, and remote sensing.

In 2006, Shepherd joined the Department of Geography’s Atmospheric Sciences Program at UGA. He is currently an Associate Professor conducting research, advising, and teaching in atmospheric sciences, climatology, water cycle processes and urban climate systems. At UGA, he serves on the Franklin College Faculty Senate, Franklin College Task Force on Diversity, and the Geography Department’s Advisory Committee. He is also a member of the NASA Precipitation Measurement Missions Science team.
