Bachelor of Music Education Degree

During the 2000-2001 academic year, Emmanuel College was reviewed by the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) for approval of five new degree programs, one of which was Music Education. We are pleased to announce that Emmanuel College has been approved to offer a degree in Music Education beginning in the spring of 2002.

The conceptual framework of the education unit at Emmanuel College, including the Music Education Program, is designed to prepare knowing, sharing, and caring candidates for effective careers in the teaching profession. The conceptual framework of the School of Education follows:

Mission and Goal Statement

In keeping with the philosophy of Emmanuel College, which is based on a Christian worldview, the School of Education's goals are to integrate faith, living, learning, and teaching in such a way as to prepare prospective teachers to make a positive contribution in a multicultural and global society. Our mission is to prepare professional, lifelong learners, who in their quest for truth are free to explore, reflect, analyze, and think critically within the framework of a loving relationship with God. These are learners who are willing to become servant leaders. We believe that the School of Education should build a bridge linking historical and philosophical theory with practice.

Within this framework our students, as professional educators, will develop knowledge of content and pedagogy, procedures for developing appropriate instructional methods and assessment, and strategies for developing positive classroom environments that facilitate learning, support students, and encourage partnerships with the home, school, and community. Reflecting our Christian worldview, the goal of the Emmanuel College School of Education is to develop teachers who are "knowing, sharing, and caring." This framework is designed to develop the following competencies:

Teachers who KNOW will demonstrate

  1. a knowledge of content.
  2. a knowledge of principles of learning, human growth and development, philosophical concepts, and the values of a diverse society.
Teachers who SHARE will demonstrate

  1. the ability to organize, manage, and facilitate learning.
  2. the ability to design effective and productive learning activities.
  3. the ability to select and use appropriate curriculum resources.
  4. the ability to develop and utilize appropriate assessment procedures.
Teachers who CARE will demonstrate

  1. the ability to create a classroom climate of respect and acceptance of students and parents of diverse backgrounds.
  2. the ability to affirm and support all students in their learning efforts.
  3. the ability to join with the home and community to form cooperative partnerships.
  4. the ability to develop professionally.
