AuditionsAuditions

Auditions- Each applicant will be asked to perform for the music faculty. Compositions should be performed from memory and should be of equivalent difficulty to those listed below. Students who are unfamiliar with this type of music should consult a high school chorus or band director. Students who are taking lessons from a private music teacher should consult him or her for help in their selections. The audition will include a brief interview, limited sight reading, and tonal memory. Audition results are based on the applicant's ability to read music, musical background, preparedness, and the desired qualities for musical potential.

Requirements:

  • Voice: One song from a standard anthology, such as a 19th Century art song, sung in the original language or in English. Examples of anthologies are Pathways of Song, 24 Italian Songs and Arias, and Music for Millions: Art Song.
  • Piano: Two contrasting pieces from the standard repertoire. For example, a Bach Two-Part Invention, a movement from a sonatina or sonata, or a Chopin Prelude or Nocturne.
  • Organ: Two contrasting pieces from the standard repertoire. For example, one of the Little Preludes and Fugues of Bach, or a slow movement from a more recent period. In addition, you should be prepared to sight read a hymn.
  • Brass, Woodwind and Strings: One solo from the standard literature, plus two major scales, chosen by the faculty at the audition.
  • Percussion: One solo or exercise on the snare drum and one solo or exercise on another percussion instrument.
