Applied Music Lessons All students taking applied music for credit will receive a minimum of 13 weekly lessons. Placement in private or class lessons will depend upon the major, the area of concentration, and level of musical ability. All voice students who have not studied voice previously at Emmanuel College will enroll in Class Voice. Beginning piano students will enroll in Class Piano for the first semester. Credit HoursMusic Majors will register for two hours of credit each semester in their major area and one hour of credit in the minor area. Students registered for one credit hour will receive one 25 minute lesson per week. Students registered for two credit hours will receive one 50 minute lesson per week. Any student who wishes to take applied music for more than 2 credits may do so with permission of the music faculty.
Lesson Requirements:Piano Majors:
- Technique-(4 semester requirement) all major and minor scales at prescribed tempos, arpeggios and chord progressions, appropriate technical studies
- Repertoire-2 memorized pieces (per semester) of different styles from standard repertoire; ensemble music (spring semester); sight reading
Piano Non-Majors:
- Technique-minimum of 5 scales per semester, arpeggios and chord progressions, appropriate technical studies.
- Repertoire-1 memorized piece from standard repertoire.
Voice Majors:
- Students taking 1 credit hour: 3 to 4 songs per semester, including at least one in Italian.
- Students taking 2 credit hours:
Freshmen: 5 songs, one in Italian. Sophomores: 5 songs, two in two different foreign languages. Juniors: 6 songs, three in three different foreign languages. Seniors: 6 or 7 songs, at least three different foreign languages represented. Must total at least 45 minutes of music.
- Voice majors will practice with the accompanist 30 minutes per week, and the accompanist will attend the lesson for 30 minutes per week.
Voice Non-majors:
- 3 songs per semester, at least one in Italian. The student will practice with his or her accompanist 15 minutes per week and the accompanist will attend the lesson for 15 minutes per week.
Instrumental Majors:
- Technique-minimum of 4 scales and arpeggios per semester at prescribed tempos, with appropriate technical studies.
- Repertoire-two pieces with contrasting styles from the standard repertoire or two contrasting movements from a multi-movement work. One of the pieces (movements) must be memorized.
Instrumental Non-majors:
Repertoire- one piece from standard repertoire- must be memorized How To Register Registration Process:
- Registration approval begins in the Music Department.
- YOU must obtain approval from an instructor of your choice to take lessons. - You are to obtain a registration form from your instructor(s) to present to your advisor. Call the instructor to get details as to how forms may be completed.
- Once you have a signed registration form from your instructor, you register with your advisor or your applied music instructor.
In order to register you must have a signed registration form and payment.
- Payment must be made in the Business Office before your first lesson.
You are not registered for the lesson until this process is completed!
